Word, on the other hand, was customized by Microsoft for Microsoft's needs - producing manuals for its programs. It also had a much better table creating and manipulation capability than Word. WordPerfect became a de facto standard in the legal community because it had a superior way to handle paragraph numbering and other special formatting. (Remember, there was no Internet then and no "just download the latest version.")

There used to be a saying among the Windows programmers: "Windows ain't done 'til Lotus don't run." Every version of Windows featured a change in internal operations that was minor, but enough to break the program until an update could be made. Lotus 1-2-3 was the subject of a pogrom by Microsoft. Because it allowed typists to easily transfer their skills, it helped popularize the IBM PC. These were mapped onto the ten F-keys to the left of the keyboard. WordStar was a "virtualized" version of the Wang dedicated word processor machine/computer.
